Namaste Travellers - It's our honor that you commence Nepal Tourism Year Lumbini, 2012 ( Native land of Light of Asia - God Gautum Buddha)
Lumbini is located in the south-central Terai of Nepal, situated in the foothills of the Himalayas. For millions of Buddhists the world over, it evokes a kind of holy sentiment akin to the significance of Jerusalem to Christians and Mecca to Muslims. Lumbini is the place where Lord Buddha - the apostle of peace, and the Light of Asia - was born in 623 B.C. In historical terms, the region is an exquisite treasure-trove of ancient ruins and antiquities, dating back to the pre-Christian era. The site (Lumbini Grove) was described as a beautiful garden in the Buddha's time and still retains its legendary charm and beauty. Both the Shakyas and Kolias Clans owned the garden and its tranquil environs at the time of Lord Buddha's birth. King Suddhodana, father of Buddha was of the Shakya Dynasty belonging to the Kshatriya or Warrior Caste.
Pokhara is a remarkable place for natural beauty at an altitude of 827 m above mean sea level & 200 km west of Kathmandu. This city is ever known as a real paradise in Earth. The Valley is filled with swift flowing river and dotted with clear gleaming lakes. It is blessed with the back drop is the most dramatic sceneries in world. A 140km of panoramic Himalayan ranges seem close enough to be touched. But also can be felt. The magnificence of the Himalayas rising behind the lake create an ambience of peace & magic, popular for water rafting, Kayaking and trekking expeditions following the unification of Nepal in 1769. It took a shape of permanent bazaar (small town). Newar migrants from Kathmandu Valley established business and introduced new architecture design of the city. It grew as a catering place to caravan traders with limited infrastructure facilities located at the break of bulk point along the trans-Himalayan trade routes.
Chitwan National Park is situated in the southern lowlands (the Terai) in Nepal. Chitwan (meaning 'heart of the jungle') is one of the finest wildlife reserves in Asia. It is home to more than 700 species of birds and over 70 species of wild creatures including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger, elephants, one-horned white rhinos, sloths and garial crocodiles.
Chitwan region has been able to make a long time history for conservation
of wildlifes and plants. For many years it was the Royal hunting grounds
for the Kings and dignitaries of Nepal and therefore was not hunted
by the general public. It did however become a favorite spot for big
game safari hunters in the late nineteenth and early to mid-twentieth
centuries. This was coupled with a surge in local human populations
following the development of anti-malaria medicines in the mid-twentieth
century. The long-term effect was a drastic decrease in jungle habitat
and animal populations in the Chitwan valley as jungles were converted
to farmland and big game were hunted and poached to dangerously low
numbers. The falling rhino (less than 200) and tiger (less than 30)
populations in the present park region, focused attention on the Chitwan
region and in 1963 the southern two-thirds of the park were declared
rhino sanctuary. With sanctuary status came the relocation of 22,000
people from the Chitwan valley and a moratorium on hunting. Since 1963
wildlife populations and ecosystems have been rebounding. In 1973 Chitwan
became Nepal’s first National Park. The relatively pristine state of
the modern park and its unique ecosystems prompted UNESCO to declare
the park a World Heritage site in 1984.
