Chitwan National Park is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding wild life sanctuaries in the world. Royal Chitwan National Park is located 166 Kms Southwest of Kathmandu, 204 Kms Southeast of Pokhara. The National Park is large area of low, heavily forested hills bordering India in the south. It covers nearly 400 square miles. This creates a heaven of wildlife, which also includes leopards, monkeys, and varieties of deer, wild boar and around 400 species of birds. It is also home to nearly 60 Bengal Tigers.Nepal has nine National Parks, four Wildlife Reserves and three Conservation Area. About 15,000 square kilometers amounting to almost 18 percent of the total area is protected. This is an amazing commitment to conservation.

The area has two distinct seasons - the wet monsoon season (June through September) and the dry winter monsoons. The best time to visit the park is March through May and September to December. The nearest airport is Meghauly and Nepal Airlines have regular flights to and from Kathmandu.

Bardia National Park

Bardiya National Park is a protected area in Nepal that was established in 1988 as Royal Bardia National Park.The Royal Bardia National(968 sq. km) Park is situated on the eastern banks of the Karnali River, about 400 kms. west of Kathmandu, is the largest and most undisturbed wilderness area in the Terai. Thickly covered with sal trees and carpeted with class and savannah , the park has the second largest tiger population after Chitwan National park.In 1815, Nepal lost this region to the East India Company through the Sugauli Treaty. For 45 years it was a part of British India and returned to Nepal in 1860 in recognition for supporting the suppression of the Indian Independence movement in 1857. Today, this annexed area is still called Naya Muluk meaning new country. Other wild animals that roam here are the one-horned rhino, wild elephant, swamp deer, black buck, antelope, Gharial crocodile, and gangetic dolphin.Bardia is the home of a wide variety of animals, many of which live in and around the Phantas.These open grasslands such as Baghora and Lamkoli are the best places to view animals. The most conspicuous of which is the spotted deer. Other ungulates include black buck, hog deer, Samber deer, wild boar and Barasingha or swamp deer. Two species of monkeys, the Langur and the rhesus macaque are also present.Endangered birds that make there home here include the Bengal florican and sarus crane.The species such as herons, kingfishers and wall creepers. More than 350 bird species have been recorded in Bardia, truly a bird watcher's paradise.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (175sq km) is set in the flood plain of the Koshi River in the eastern Terai and is a haven for birds and bird lovers. There are more than 280 species of birds in the reverse and it is also a resting place for migrating birds that can’t be seen elsewhere in Nepal. Mammals that abound here include the wild water buffalo (arna), wild bear, spotted deer and the blue bull.
