Best Season for Everest Base Camp Trekking and Island Peak
The prime seasons to embark on this combined trek & climb are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these times, the skies are clearer, the weather is more stable, and you can see the mountains better.
Winter is much colder, the nights are harsh, and some lodges may be closed. The monsoon season brings heavy rain, cloudy skies, and muddy, slippery trails, so these are not the best times to go.
What Makes Everest Base Camp Trekking and Island Peak Special?
- This expedition is exceptional because it combines two of the most iconic experiences in the Himalayas: the trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) and the climb of Island Peak (6,189 m / 20,305 ft, also known as Imja Tse).
- Participants walk through the beautiful Khumbu Valley, visit Sherpa villages and monasteries like Tengboche,
- Cross glacial moraines, and then reach the top of a Himalayan peak.
- This trip is both memorable and one-of-a-kind because of the mix of cultural immersion, stunning scenery, and personal achievement (standing at EBC and climbing Island Peak).
How Difficult is Everest Base Camp Trekking and Island Peak?
The experience as a whole is rated as moderate to hard. The trek to EBC includes long days of hiking up hills at high altitudes. The climb of Island Peak, on the other hand, includes mountaineering skills like glacier travel, crampons, ice-axe, and fixed rope, and it reaches 6,189 m. Key difficulty factors include:
- Long days of trekking (5–7 hours or more) in high-altitude terrain.
- The summit day for Island Peak, which is physically demanding and exposed to steep snow/ice sections.
- The need for good acclimatization and stamina.
Participants in Island Peak don’t need to be very good at technical rock climbing, but they do need to be in good shape, mentally ready, and able to handle high-altitude conditions.
Permits Required
Several permits are needed for this package:
- Entry permit for Sagarmatha National Park (EBC region)
- Climbing permit for Island Peak (via the Nepal Mountaineering Association)
- TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
These are arranged by Skyline Treks making sure that trekkers get a smooth and comfortable start.
Safety and Precautions
Safety is paramount on this expedition, and you should adopt the following precautions:
- To lower the risk of altitude sickness, go up slowly and include acclimatization days (the itinerary includes these).
- Use the right climbing gear for Island Peak, such as an ice axe, crampons, a harness, a helmet, and so on.
- Certified guides should show you how to use the gear and keep an eye on you.
- Keep an eye on the weather and the trail, especially at high camps and when you’re pushing to the top.
- Travel insurance is essential—make sure it covers trekking and climbing up to and above 6,000 m and includes emergency evacuation.
- Listen to your body, drink plenty of water, eat well, and get enough sleep.
- Follow your guide’s instructions at all times; do not push on if you feel unwell or symptoms of AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness) appear.
Training and Preparation
To maximise your success and enjoyment:
- In the months leading up to the trip, focus on getting your heart and lungs in shape by running, biking, and climbing stairs.
- Go on a hike in the hills or mountains with a backpack to mimic the weight and terrain of trekking.
- Squats, lunges, and planks are all good ways to get your legs, core, and back ready for climbing, going down, and carrying gear.
- Familiarise yourself with basic mountaineering concepts: ice‑axe, crampons, rope technique—Island Peak Base Camp includes training.
- Get your mind ready for high altitudes, rough terrain, and maybe even easier places to stay and things to do.
Skyline Treks’ itinerary includes thoughtful acclimatization days to support your preparation.
Mountain Views
The scenery on this expedition is spectacular. You will see world‑famous peaks such as Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and more.
The climb up Island Peak gives you stunning views of ridgelines and glaciers. This is one of Nepal’s most beautiful adventures because it combines forested valleys, high alpine landscapes, glaciers, and views from the top.
Can you see Everest from Island Peak
Yes, you can see Mount Everest from Island Peak (Imja Tse). While Island Peak itself is not as high as Everest, it offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including the southern face of Mount Everest, Lhotse (which is directly adjacent to Everest), and other famous mountains like Makalu, Ama Dablam, and Nuptse.
The best views of Everest are from higher elevations during the ascent of Everest base camp and island peak hike, especially from its summit at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet). However, the view of Everest is not as direct or iconic as it is from other viewpoints in the region, like Kala Patthar or Gokyo Ri.
Altitude Sickness and Prevention
Given elevations reaching 6,189 m on the summit of Island Peak, altitude sickness is a real concern. Prevention measures include:
- Take your time going up and plan for rest and acclimatization days.
- To help your body at high altitudes, drink a lot of water and eat meals that are high in energy.
- Avoid over‑exertion in the first days of the trek.
- Know the early signs of AMS, which include headache, nausea, dizziness, and tiredness. If they get worse, go down.
- Consider discussing Diamox (acetazolamide) with your doctor for prevention.
- Travel with a guide who monitors altitude response and can assist with evacuation if needed.
What to Expect During Everest Base Camp Trekking and Island Peak
Expect a rich adventure combining trekking and mountaineering. You will:
- Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, then trek through Khumbu Valley, visiting Sherpa villages (Namche Bazaar, Tengboche).
- Reach Everest Base Camp and climb to Kala Patthar for sunrise views.
- Go on to Chhukung or Island Peak Base Camp to learn how to climb and then reach the top of Island Peak.
- Stay in a mix of tea houses (lodges) in the lower parts of the trek and tent camps in the higher parts where you climb.
- Walk on a variety of surfaces, such as forest trails, alpine ridges, glacial moraines, and snow slopes.
- See the culture of the Sherpas, their monasteries, suspension bridges, and stunning views of the Himalayas.
- Be prepared for physically demanding days, remote conditions, and the reward of a summit.

- Above certain heights, mobile and internet signals get weaker.
- Cash is needed for extras; remote locations may not have card facilities.
- The weather and flight schedules (especially for Lukla) may cause delays, so you need to be flexible.
- The summit of Island Peak is optional based on fitness and conditions; guides will assess readiness.
- Travel insurance is mandatory and must cover high altitude and emergency evacuation.
Is Everest Base Camp Trekking and Island Peak for Me?
If you are a trekker with good physical fitness, willingness to carry a daypack, some prior high‑altitude trekking experience (preferably above 4,000 m) and an interest in both trekking and mountaineering, then yes—this combined adventure is suitable for you.
If you prefer short walks, low altitude, luxury lodging, or have no experience with high altitude, this may be quite demanding. Island Peak adds a summit climb element that elevates the difficulty beyond a standard EBC trek.
Meals & Accommodation
During the trekking and climbing days, you’ll get three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During the trekking parts, you will stay in a mix of lodges (tea houses) and tent camps (Island Peak high camp) when you are climbing at high altitudes. At higher camps, expect simpler amenities, shared rooms and tents, fewer services, but full board meals.

Reviews
Remote Beauty, Summit ThrillWhat stood out for me was the contrast: the beautiful, wide‑open trails of the Everest region, then the steeper climb into glacial terrain on Island Peak. It felt like two adventures in one. Skyline Treks made the climb accessible: step‑by‑step training at base camp, clear explanation of what was ahead, excellent guidance on the summit push. Standing at 6,189m looking out at Everest itself felt surreal. A trek for serious adventurers.
