Nestled in the trans-Himalayan region, Mustang is often hailed as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," a desert oasis amidst the towering peaks of the Annapurna region. This high desert terrain, with its Tibetan influence, stretches from the Tibetan border south to Kagbeni, offering travelers a glimpse into a world untouched by time.
Our journey to Upper Mustang begins in Jomsom and leads us to Kagbeni, the gateway to this mystical region. Following the banks of the Kaligandaki River upstream, we traverse through breathtaking landscapes until we reach Lo-Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. Along the way, we are enveloped in the eternal beauty of Mustang, a land that has captivated the hearts of travelers for centuries.
But it is not just the natural beauty that draws visitors to Mustang; it is also the unique cultural heritage and traditions, particularly the famed Tiji festival. The Tiji festival, a three-day ritual known as "The Chasing of the Demons," is centered around the myth of Dorje Jono, a deity who battles against his demon father to save the Kingdom of Mustang from destruction.
Legend has it that the demon father wreaks havoc on Mustang by causing a water shortage, the most precious resource in this arid land. Dorje Jono ultimately triumphs over the demon, banishing him from the land and ushering in the wetter monsoon season. The Tiji Festival trek 2024, timed to coincide with the end of the dry season, serves as a celebration and reaffirmation of this myth, with re-enactments and rituals that captivate the senses.
The upcoming dates for the 2024 Upper Mustang Tiji Festival are May 5th, 6th, and 7th, while the 2025 festival will take place on May 24th, 25th, and 26th. This festival, first witnessed by Michel Peissel in 1964, left an indelible impression on him, despite his initial disbelief. Today, the Tiji festival continues to enchant and mesmerize all who have the privilege of experiencing its magic.
Join us on this unforgettable journey to Mustang, where ancient myths come to life amidst the stunning landscapes of the Last Forbidden Kingdom.
