Upper Mustang, often referred to as the "Forbidden Kingdom," is a remote and culturally rich region located in the northwestern part of Nepal, bordering Tibet.
Entry Permit: Before embarking on a tour of Upper Mustang, you need to obtain a special permit from the Nepalese government. Due to its restricted status and efforts to preserve its unique culture and landscape, access to Upper Mustang is controlled. You can obtain this permit through our fully Nepal Government registered trekking agency in Kathmandu.
Getting There: The journey usually starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a flight to Jomsom, the administrative center of the Mustang region. Alternatively, you can take a bus or jeep from Pokhara to Jomsom, although this option involves a long and bumpy ride.
Trekking Route: From Jomsom, the trekking route typically follows the Kali Gandaki River upstream, passing through several Tibetan-influenced villages such as Kagbeni, Chele, and Geling. Along the way, you'll encounter breathtaking landscapes, ancient monasteries, and traditional Mustangi architecture.
Lo Manthang: The highlight of the tour is reaching Lo Manthang, the capital of Mustang. This walled city is home to the former royal palace, as well as several monasteries, chortens, and narrow alleys lined with whitewashed houses. You'll have the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the region and interact with the local Thakali and Loba communities.
Cultural Exploration: Upper Mustang is renowned for its rich Buddhist heritage, evident in its monasteries, prayer flags, and religious festivals. During your Mustang Jeep Safari, you may witness traditional ceremonies, visit ancient monastic caves such as the Chhoser Cave, and participate in local tiji festivities if your visit coincides with one.
Natural Beauty: While Mustang Jeep Tour is primarily known for its cultural attractions, the region also boasts stunning natural landscapes. From barren cliffs and rugged canyons to lush valleys and snow-capped peaks, there's no shortage of scenic vistas to behold.

Upper Mustang Tours is like nothing I’ve seen before, even after several trips to Nepal. The tour took us to such remote, untouched places, and every village had so much history. The guides were knowledgeable and shared so much about the local culture. Lo Manthang was a true highlight, with its ancient architecture and welcoming people.
